About 60 Minute Mentor

The 60MM project is an inspirational, employer led project available to select Southend schools. The project won joint First Prize in 2018 from the Institute for Economic Development, for being the most innovative Economic Development project in the UK.

How the project works

Schools select a cohort of Year 8 students to take part of the project. Students are then matched with a mentor from the local business community for a 7-month period. During this time each student will receive four structured mentoring interventions in a mix of group and one to one sessions. The project runs at a really important time for the students as it is just before they select their GCSE options.

Each session has been carefully designed to:

  • Inspire, engage and motivate young people.
  • Help to develop employability skills and introduce young people to the world of work.
  • Help young people to consider GCSE options and the post 16 options available.
  • Set goals for the future and consider future careers.

Why Mentoring?

Research has shown that employer led mentoring is one of the most effective interventions for young people to receive and can result in improved behaviour, engagement, attainment, self-confidence and progress in schools.

Outcomes of the 60 Minute Mentor programme

In the short term we are looking to:

  • Increase the students’ self-confidence and aspirations
  • Give the student a better understanding of the world of work
  • Improve the students’ knowledge of post 16 options available to them
  • Give the student the ability to make more informed decisions about their future.

The overall long term goal of the programme is to improve the prospects of the students who take part and more specifically work towards improving

  • % 16 year olds poorly prepared for work
  • % 16-17 year olds NEET
  • % 18 year olds on apprenticeships/traineeships
  • % pupils achieving 5 level 4 or above at GCSE
