November 2019 Edition: Southend Business Partnership Newsletetr

Published: Thursday, 14th November 2019

The SBP Newsletter for November 2019.

With the clocks going back we are certainly heading towards winter. For the first time in a while we have decided to reformat the plans for November to reflect the positive and helpful feedback we received from our recent Southend Business Partnership (SBP) survey undertaken jointly with the Council.

As mentioned in our last newsletter instead of a single SBP briefing we have planned a number of smaller but more focused round table events over the next few months. The first one is on 18 November 2019 with the focus on major development projects in Southend-on-Sea. Due to high demand for the session it will now be run in the morning (9:30-12) and again in the afternoon (1:30-4)

The sessions are being held at the Tickfield Centre (please note the change of venue) where some parking spaces are available. The morning session is fully booked and there are very limited places left for the afternoon session so book now if you are interested.

We are also pleased to invite local businesses and support organisations to a business round table event on Friday 6 December 2019 from 8:30am to 11:30am in Committee Room 1 (Jubilee Room), at the Civic Centre on Victoria Avenue. The event will give businesses the opportunity to find out more on the Council services available that can help them. It will start with networking and a marketplace where businesses will be able to see a range of services offered by the council and ask questions. After short presentations from Business Rates, Regulatory Services, and Planning teams, businesses will have the opportunity for round table discussion and questions. Informal yet informative, the workshop will help the Council work more effectively with local businesses to improve productivity. Places are limited so early booking at evolutive is strongly recommended.

Southend Social Enterprise and Responsible Organisation Partnership delivered a successful and engaging networking event on 10 October 2019 at Twenty One. With over 40 delegates the event saw an increasing interest in the social enterprise arena. SAVS and the Council (Social Value Commissioning) were the key contributors with special support from Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions who shared their model and impact of operations. The event was in support of the national 'Buy Social for a Better World' campaign. Going forward, we would ask all Southend Social Enterprises to take part in the forthcoming #WhoKnew digital campaign on 21 November 2019 - Social Enterprise Day, to give yourself the chance to tell your stories, to show what makes you different from traditional businesses and to shout about the impact of your work. Please use downloadable poster here and share pictures across social media on the day, using hashtags #WhoKnew, #SocialEnterpriseDay, and #ResponsibleSouthend

Energyst Consulting are pleased to announce a Free Green Energy Programme, supported by a multi million pound green energy fund. It works with three wins: 1) owners of buildings with large roofs are paid a rent to have the solar panels on their roofs; 2) building occupiers receive low cost green energy (cheaper than grid prices); and 3) spare green energy is sold via the grid to offset dirty brown energy. Early applications from new builds are welcome. Apply by emailing to Terence@energystconsulting.co.uk or calling 07444 697115.

A Better Start Southend’s Resilience, Ideas and Innovation Fund helps support community groups, organisations and individuals who have a great idea about how to make lives better for young children and their families in ABSS wards. The Office of the Small Business Commissioner is an independent public body appointed by the Government under the Enterprise Act 2019 to tackle late payment and poor payment practice in the private sector of the UK. For more information on the work of the Small Business Commissioner, and how it could support your business, visit the dedicated website: www.smallbusinesscommissioner.gov.uk

At this point of the year I think it will be remiss of me not to mention Small Business Saturday (SBS) UK on the 7 December 2019. It's a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and support small businesses in their communities. To take advantage of the free marketing and exposure all small businesses are recommended to register at Small Business Saturday UK. For the 7th year, Southend Borough Council is supporting the campaign by offering free parking on the day at the 7 district car parks including: Ilfracombe Avenue -Southchurch; North Road - Westcliff; Hamlet Court Road - Westcliff; Elm Road - Leigh; North Street - Leigh; Ceylon Road - Westcliff; and Thorpe Bay Broadway. We are also keen to help promote any special offers you may plan for the day so please email the details to economicd@southend.gov.uk or message us via Facebook at www.facebook.com/businessonsea

The Council is again running Southend Best Festive Business Competition this year to extend the above SBS campaign. We would like to invite all small and/or independent businesses across the borough to decorate their businesses fit for Christmas, and take part in the competition by sharing a photo. Photos will be posted at www.facebook.com/businessonsea for public to vote. A business winner will receive a free promotion video (approx. value £500) sponsored and created by Blatella Films. And a lucky public voter will receive £100 shopping voucher. Photo submission is accepted now and voting is open from 16 November to 20 December 2019. For details and instructions on how to enter/vote please visit BusinessOnSea website. Good luck!

I would also like to mention that the next SBP Briefing will be hosted on Thursday 26 March 2020 (please note the change of date for those who have already booked it) at the Park Inn. Details will be updated as soon as they are confirmed. Please click here to book a place.
