60 Minute Mentor

60 Minute Mentor

The 60 Minute Mentor Southend & Thurrock (60MMST) Project is an inspirational, employer led, mentoring service available to selected schools across Southend and Thurrock.

Schools select a cohort of Year 8 students to take part in the project. Students are then matched with a mentor from a local employer for a six month period. During this time each student will receive four structured mentoring interventions. The students will also be offered the opportunity to have a workplace experience.

Each session has been carefully designed to:

  • Inspire, engage and motivate young people.
  • Help to develop employability skills and introduce young people to the world of work.
  • Help young people to consider GCSE options and the post 16 options available.
  • Set goals for the future and consider future careers.

Why Mentoring?

Research has shown that employer led mentoring is one of the most effective interventions for young people to receive and can result in improved behaviour, engagement, attainment, self-confidence and progress in schools.

Feedback from Schools:

Kelly Nicholls – Cecil Jones: I would like to thank the mentors for their work with our students and especially our students for their positive approach to the programme and for relishing in the opportunity they have been given.

Sue Gates – Belfairs: Academy Head of Student Wellbeing: “I think the scheme is a great one, all the students have said they enjoyed it and are asking when their next session is.  I have seen a real difference in some of the student’s attitudes and behaviour”.

Feedback from students:

St Thomas More School students: “It helped me with what I wanted to pick and made me feel unique”.

St Clere’s School student: “I learnt that we should work hard and fight for what we believe in”

Greensward Academy student: “I enjoyed the way I could talk to someone about my future”
