60 Minute Mentor

The 60 Minute Mentor South Essex (60MMSE) Project is an inspirational employer led mentoring service available to selected schools and students across South Essex (Southend-on-Sea, Thurrock, Basildon, Rochford and Castle Point).

Schools are able to select ten Year 8 students to take part in the programme with delivery running from September – September each academic year.  On the programme students will be matched with a positive role model from a local employer for a seven month period. During this time each young person will receive four structured mentoring interventions, including two group mentoring sessions and two 1-2-1 mentoring sessions.

Each session has been carefully designed to:

- inspire, engage and motivate young people
- help to develop employability skills and introduce young people to the world of work
- help young people to consider GCSE options and the post 16 options available
- set goals for the future and consider future careers

Why Mentoring?

Research has shown that employer led mentoring is one of the most effective interventions for young people to receive and can result in improved behaviour, engagement, attainment, self-confidence and progress in schools.

To date the programme has:

  • Matched 641 young people to a work place mentor
  • Engaged with 29 schools
  • Engaged with 40 inspirational mentors from a range of different industries and employers

Feedback from Schools:

Robert Frost - Shoeburyness High School Head of Year 8 “A mum of one of the students really praised the intervention.  Her son, who is usually very disengaged in school wouldn’t stop talking about the intervention”.

Sue Gates - Belfairs Academy Head of Student Wellbeing “I think the scheme is a great one, all the students have said they enjoyed it and are asking when their next session is.  I have seen a real difference in some of the student’s attitudes and behaviour”.

Donna McGagh - St Thomas More Teacher “Teachers had noticed that students behaviour had improved since the last session”.
