Ambition Southend: Skills and Labour Market Strategy

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council is consulting on Ambition Southend, a Skills and Labour Market Strategy for Southend-on-Sea. The consultation paper is the product of a project to develop a Skills Strategy for the borough. Its aim is to enable an efficient, effective labour market with clear, accessible career pathways for residents, which is able to respond to emerging economic risks and opportunities. The paper seeks to analyse and draw together key findings from the research to identify key priorities to improve the local skills system. The paper has been informed by findings from an evidence review and series of initial consultation meetings.

The consultation paper provides some initial analysis, conclusions, proposals and questions for your consideration and feedback. This feedback focuses on:

  • Strengths of the borough in relation to skills and the workforce
  • Weakness of the borough in relation to skills and the workforce
  • Challenges within the skills and labour market arena
  • Opportunities within the skills and labour market arena
  • Desired outcomes from an effective skills and labour system and market
  • Focus areas of a skills and labour market strategy and subsequent action plan
    • Leadership
    • Life transitions
    • Agility of provision
    • Skills charter and virtual academy for skills and employment
    • Utilisation of existing assets and networks

A Better Start Southend

A Better Start Southend: Work Skills Project

Since its inception in 2015, the Work Skills project has been a key cog in A Better Start Southend, with a focus on skills, enterprise, employment and wider economic development and with the aim of inspiring and exciting parents of children under 4 in the A Better Start Southend wards. The project shows to parents that the world of work can be both exciting and accommodating to them and the needs of their young children.

The project has 4 key areas:

  • Learning for Mum and Dad
  • Introduction 2 Enterprise Workshops
  • Enhanced Careers Advice and Industry Visits
  • 60 Minute Mentor Inspirational Talks

The 60 Minute Mentor South Essex (60MMSE)

The 60MMSE programme is an inspiring mentoring services available to selected schools and students across south Essex (Basildon, Thurrock, Rochford, Castle Point and Southend-on-Sea).  The project provides vital support and guidance for yourn people in Year 8, specifcally those at risk of disengagement.  

Matching young people to an inspirational role model can have many postitive impacts including:

  • Increased confidence
  • Increased engagement in school
  • Increased aspirations and motivation

Enterprise Adviser Network

The Enterprise Adviser Network is a national project that has been tailored locally to meet the needs to Southend’s young people, businesses and schools. It has been set up to inspire and prepare young people for the world of work.

Our network of Enterprise Advisers is made up of volunteers from businesses and other employers, both large and small. They work directly with the leadership of schools and colleges to develop effective employer engagement programmes. Schools, colleges and Enterprise Advisers are supported by a full time Enterprise Coordinator.
